Why I’m Involved: Carole Long

Testimonial Carole Long

The steady and successful progression of Pennock Village’s development has been shaped by selfless contributions & valuable insight of many experienced individuals, each offering assistance in their field of expertise. Here’s why Carole Long, Secretary of the Board, chose to become involved:

Carole Long was initially introduced to Pennock Village through several early startup studies which she helped lead.

When I first learned about Pennock Village, what stood out to me right away was how much heart and effort was already behind it. It was clear this wasn’t just an idea being talked about, it was something people were actively working toward, with a real vision for the community.”

As Secretary of the Board, Carole’s role is to help document meetings, track the ideas being discussed, and keep a record of the progress made as things move forward. “I make sure we remember all the brilliant things said in the meeting once we’ve gone home and forgotten half of them,” as she jokingly puts it.

“James originally approached me about a Secretary position, and I didn’t have to think about it for long. James is a genuine person and someone I really respect. When someone like that asks you to be part of something meaningful, it’s hard to say no. I also really admire the dedication behind Pennock Village. I find it incredibly inspiring when people come together with an idea meant to benefit the community and then pour their time, energy, and resources into making it happen. That kind of commitment is rare, and it’s something I wanted to support.”

“I really admire the dedication behind Pennock Village…that kind of commitment is rare.”

One of the things Carole appreciates about Thunder Bay itself, is how close the rural settings are. Being connected to the city, but also to the space, peace, and sense of quiet that makes life feel a little slower and simpler. A rural resident herself, Carole supported the idea of a rural seniors community immediately.

“A busy city environment shouldn’t be your only option as you age. People deserve choices, and Pennock Village offers a really special one. I truly believe in this development because of the community it will create. It’s not just a group of units – it’s a future neighbourhood of like-minded people who will be able to live near others, sharing a similar lifestyle and values. There’s something comforting about that, and something really exciting too. We, [the Board], talk a lot about community, but this is one of those rare projects you actually see coming to life.”

What excites Carole most about the development of Pennock Village, is watching the progress happen in real time. Seeing the homes taking shape is incredibly rewarding to her.

“It’s amazing how far we’ve come, and every time I see development forming, it feels a little more real. I can’t wait for the day when people start moving in, when it shifts from being a project to a lived-in community filled with stories, friendships, and connections. And honestly, I can’t wait until we get to the point where we can stop talking about timelines and start talking about housewarming parties!” she adds.

“There’s a lot of laughter along the way, which says a lot about the kind of community we’re building…”

Carole has enjoyed being a part of Pennock Village. She has learned a lot along the way, and genuinely enjoys working with the other Board members. She considers it a privilege to work alongside people who care so much and who are so committed to making this happen.

“We have a great team, and even though the work is serious and important, there’s also a lot of laughter along the way, which I think says a lot about the kind of community we’re building already. It’s pretty incredible to see what can be accomplished when a community pulls together, and I’m proud to be part of something that will have such a positive impact for years to come”.
